The recent International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict on June 19th was not just a reminder of the atrocities that have taken place, but a call to action for us all to continue to work towards a future free of sexual violence. We at Croydon Community Against Trafficking (CCAT) stand in solidarity with survivors and all those affected by this heinous crime.
Sexual violence in conflict zones is a brutal tactic of war, often used to terrorise and destabilise communities. The impact is devastating, leaving survivors with deep physical and psychological scars, and communities in turmoil. Despite international laws and treaties, sexual violence continues to be a weapon of war, affecting thousands of people each year, particularly women and children.

The Role of CCAT in Combatting Sexual Violence
At CCAT, our mission is to fight against human trafficking and sexual exploitation. We understand that sexual violence in conflict is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach. Our efforts are focused on prevention, protection and raising awareness of the complex issues around modern-day slavery. Here’s how we contribute to this global fight:
- Awareness and Education: Raising awareness about the realities of sexual violence in conflict is crucial. We conduct educational programs and workshops to inform the public and policymakers about the importance of taking action against this crime.
- Advocacy: We advocate for stronger laws and policies to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable. Our advocacy work includes lobbying for international cooperation and stronger enforcement of existing laws.
- Community Engagement: Engaging local communities is vital in the fight against sexual violence. We work closely with community leaders and organisations to create a network of support and vigilance against trafficking and exploitation.
Global Solidarity and Local Action
While sexual violence in conflict is a global issue, local action is imperative. By standing together as a community, we can make a difference. Here are some ways you can get involved:
- Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about the issues and share information with your network. Knowledge is power, and spreading awareness can lead to action.
- Support Local Organisations: Volunteer your time or donate to organisations like CCAT that are on the front lines of this battle.
- Advocate for Change: Contact your local representatives and urge them to support policies that protect survivors and prevent sexual violence.
- Attend Events: Participate in events and campaigns that focus on ending sexual violence. Your presence and voice can amplify the message and bring about change.
A Call to Action
Following the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, we urge you to continue to raise awareness and join us in our fight. Let’s honor the resilience of survivors by committing to action and advocating for a world where sexual violence is not tolerated.
Together, we can create a safer, more just world. Stand with CCAT, stand with survivors, and take a stand against sexual violence in conflict.
